The Sonic Entanglements Podcast is back! The second season is hosted and produced by Gardika Gigih, a music composer and researcher from Indonesia. Entitled “Dari Akar ke Mekar,” Indonesian for “From roots to blossoms,” the series traces how field recordings of Philippine traditional music cultures inspire new works by Filipino contemporary composers. Gardika produced this series as part of his three-month artist residency at the University of the Philippines, where he was a fellow of the Decolonizing Southeast Asian Sound Archives project.

In this season’s first episode, Gardika delves into the profound work of preserving and revitalizing Filipino traditional music through the archives of the University of the Philippines Centre for Ethnomusicology (or UPCE). It features insightful conversations with Roan Opiso, the collection manager at UPCE, and Dino Guadalupe, UPCE sound engineer. They discuss the diverse collections housed at UPCE, including the core Jose Maceda collection, which has been part of the UNESCO Memory of the World Registry since 2007. The episode also explores the meticulous process of digitizing thousands of hours of audio recordings to preserve the cultural heritage of over 76 ethnolinguistic groups across the Philippines, ensuring these invaluable sounds are accessible to future generations.
